Student Life

Clubs & societies

Societies

Students spend a lot of time in lectures or studying in the library, but they also do lots of fun social things too. While you might have lunchtime or after school clubs, students can join lots of different clubs which are called societies. These might be related to degree subjects, like the Geography or Psychology Society. They could be about something totally different like the Art Society who get together to paint and draw, Dumbledore’s Army, which is the University of Liverpool Harry Potter Society, or the Baking Society, who make cakes and eat them together! There are also lots of societies to do with culture which help students feel part of a community where they belong like the Arab Society and the South Asian society.

There are hundreds of different societies so no matter what you’re interested in, you’ll be able to find a society for it, and it’s a great way to meet people and make friends who enjoy doing the same things!

Guild of Students

The main building on campus which is specifically for students and societies is a place called the Guild of Students. Here you can socialise with your friends, get something to eat or study quietly – but it also has lots of rooms equipped for societies. There are dance studios for our dance societies, practice rooms for our musical societies and even a radio room for our Student Radio Society!

One of the main ways that societies are different from the clubs you’ll take part in at school is that they are run by students, so you’ll get to have lots of input into the different activities your society does. Students decide when and where they meet up, and what activities they will be doing. You can even make up your own society if you want to! Why not try out making your own society in our activity below?

Sports

There are also lots of sports clubs you can join. There are some common ones like football, netball and gymnastics, but also lots that you might not have tried before or even heard of like Jiu Jitsu, skiing and ultimate frisbee! Going to university is a great time to try out a new sport or hobby that you’ve never tried before. You might learn to love it

We also have a Sports Hall with a gym, climbing wall, Olympic size swimming pool and dance studios where most of our sporting societies take place. Even if you don’t join a sporting society, students can go to the sports centre to keep fit and unwind after a long hard day of lectures!

Take a look at some student sports clubs here:

Since there are so many different clubs and societies, it can be hard to find out about them all and decide which ones you would like to join. That’s why the university holds Welcome Week (sometimes called Fresher’s Fair) every September which is in the student’s first week at university. Freshers Fair is a chance for all the societies and sports clubs to get together in one place, so you can see them all, find out which ones you most like the sound of and sign up!
