Student Life
Where you live
When you go to university, you get to choose where you live. You might want to stay at home with your parents or carers if you go to a university close to your home, but lots of students decide to move into Halls of Residence.
Halls are special places which are just for students to live in and you would usually live in a flat with between 4 and 8 other students. You would each have your own bedroom but would share a kitchen and living space with the other students in your flat. You might share a bathroom or you might be lucky enough to have your own! The Halls of Residence will have a social space so it’s really easy to meet lots of other students and make new friends. They sometimes have Ping-Pong tables, TVs and beanbags so you can all hang out together after lectures!
Most of the Halls of Residence at the University of Liverpool are on campus. This means they are within walking distance of your lecture buildings, libraries, guild and sports centre! In this video below you can see a little bit more about what it’s like to live on campus at the University of Liverpool:
If you move away from home one of the things you will do yourself is cook your meals! If you want to cook your own meals you will choose accommodation that comes with a big kitchen and remember to go food shopping each week! In some halls you can pay to have breakfast and dinner provided for you in a canteen, so you don’t have to worry if you’re not a good cook! Another thing that students need to do (maybe for the first time!) is wash their clothes, halls of residence usually have a laundrette or washing machines so they can do this.
For most students it is their first time living away from home, so it is a great way to become independent! It can be scary thinking about moving away from home but it’s really exciting too.

After your first year at university you can again choose where you want to live. Instead of halls, you might rent a house or a flat to share with your best friends in an area just outside of the city, but still really close to campus!
