The Basics

Graduation

When you have finished university and passed your exams, you will get a special certificate called a degree. You are given your degree in a ceremony called graduation. Your parents or carers might come along to watch and celebrate with you and someone very important leads the graduation ceremony. You will wear a black hat (known as a mortarboard), a robe and a hood.

The colour of your hood represents the course/subject that you studied, for example a blue hood means you have studied for a health and life sciences degree, a pink hood means an arts degree (courses like English, Architecture, and Music), a blue hood means sciences (courses like biology, and chemistry) and an orange hood means a law degree. Vets is grey and Medicine is pale purple.

It is a proud day for your parents/carers who will take pictures of you and the friends that you have made at university. Some people take pictures of the graduates throwing their mortarboards in the air! Here are some pupils who have visited the campus and done a mini graduation ceremony
