The Basics
How do you learn?
Students spend lots of their time at university in lectures, which are like lessons in school but they usually take place in big rooms that look a bit like a cinema. Have you ever been in a room like this? Students are taught by lecturers or professors who are similar to teachers in school. Some of our students also learn in laboratories, where they do experiments and research.
As well as lectures, students also have tutorials which are much smaller than a lecture; usually there are about twenty people in a tutorial compared to two hundred in a lecture! Lots of students do not have a full timetable like you do in school, there may only be five or six lectures or tutorials a week so in their spare time at university, students will go to the library to work on their essays.
The style of learning is different at university as well. Instead of being guided through pieces of work by your teachers, you are expected to go and read around your subject to help you with your work. This is called independent study. At university you might even be able to choose what sort of work you would like to do, you can follow your interests or career/job goals.
Some other very cool things we have on our campus- we have lots of 3D printers in engineering, some of our students make things for their course or even things like phone cases! Engineering is a really exciting place to be because they also have flight simulators like these and real life racing cars! In Law we have a mock court room which students can practice to be solicitors, judges, or barristers. If you are studying to become a vet you will have your very own campus which is in Wirral, there are sheep, cows, pigs and many other animals there for vets to practice and learn. You can hear more about what students do on these courses in the prospectus section.
