Psychology is the study of how the brain works and why we think and behave the way that we do. If you studied psychology at university you might look at how our memory works, how different chemicals and hormones in the brain affect behaviour and how some illnesses are linked to the brain, like depression, and how we can treat them. Students will spend lots of time in lectures but also get to carry out their own experiments and research.
There are lots of different branches of psychology that you can specialise in. Clinical psychologists will work in hospitals and treat people with severe mental illnesses, whereas educational psychologists will work in schools with pupils who need extra support. Forensic psychologists (detectives) will work on crime scenes to gather evidence and try to solve what happened, and therapists will give advice and help people to overcome problems in their lives.
